Defender 90/110 (2020+)
Choosing a Roof Rack for the New Defender: Load Ratings, Mounting, and What Actually Matters
July 2, 2026 · Green Lane Supply
The new Defender (L663) has no rain gutters, which means every rack on the market mounts through the roof rails or into dedicated hard points. That one fact drives almost every decision below.
Start with the two load numbers
Every rack conversation begins with the difference between dynamic and static load:
- Dynamic load is what the roof can carry while the vehicle is moving. For the Defender 110 that's rated at 118 kg (260 lb) with the factory raised air suspension — and that number includes the weight of the rack itself.
- Static load is what the roof can hold parked — people standing on it, a roof tent with two sleepers. Land Rover rates the 110 at 300 kg (660 lb).
A 60 kg steel rack eats half your dynamic budget before you've strapped anything to it. This is why rack weight is the first spec we check, not the last.
The three mounting approaches
- Factory roof rail clamps. Easiest install, no drilling, fine for light duty — awnings, traction boards, a cargo box. The limit is the rail clamp itself, not the roof.
- Full-length platform racks with reinforced feet. The expedition choice. Distributes load across more of the roof structure and puts the deck low. This is what you want under a roof tent.
- Bolt-through solutions. Maximum strength, permanent commitment. Rare on the L663 and usually unnecessary unless you're building for sustained corrugation loads.
What we'd actually do
For a 110 running a roof tent plus an awning: a full-length aluminum platform in the 25–35 kg range, reinforced feet, and everything else kept off the roof. Batteries, water, and recovery gear ride low in the cargo area — weight up top changes how the truck corners more than any spec sheet communicates.
For a 90, or a 110 that mostly sees gravel roads: rail-mounted crossbars and a lighter kit. You can always upgrade when the build calls for it.
Fitment notes
Racks in our catalog list fitment in plain language on each product page ("Fits: Defender 110 (2020+)"). If a listing doesn't say it fits your truck, ask us before ordering — brad@greenlanesupply.com. We'd rather answer email than process a return.
